  • Finger In The Nose

Finger in the nose – what a great name for a kids’ brand you say? Well, this French brand is the epitome of style (regardless of the size of their audience!) From its ‘Sartorialist-snap-worthy’ mini models with just the right amount of attitude to its authentic rock n roll aesthetic, this brand offers quality kids’ wear for the emerging fashionista. This label is not just about cutting a stylish figure on the streets; integral to its DNA is the long-term quality of the pieces, offering superior comfort and wearability. They use 9-11 ounce real European denim with raw, stone, bleach, snow and leather-look washes, and real feather down for their jackets and Geelong merino angora for their knitwear. Their 100% cotton tees feature wild animals and mythology-style graphic prints. The only negative? Your kids could quite likely steal the spotlight from your own sartorial efforts. Consider yourself warned!

  • Shiny Dapper Shoes For Men

It’s a vexing conundrum: you can tell a lot about a man by his shoes; yet there are only a limited number of ways a gentleman can truly express himself via his footwear. Men’s shoes just don’t cut it in the expansive design stakes. But we’re sensing a mood shift, as evidenced by these snappy striders, fresh for Spring 2010. Christian Louboutin’s Freddy Flats lace-up shoes are made with patent leather and smattered with a profusion of studs to the toe and heel. They scream: daringly dapper. Not surprisingly Pharrell Williams has already stepped out in a pair. In keeping with what the bling theme, Michael Kors has released these Capote Flats. Made from tan leather and featuring silver toe jewellery they’re a statement in English eccentricity.

  • Jean Paul Gaultier and Levi’s

The bold reconstruction by the ever-youthful Jean Paul Gaultier was not without his signature touches, the chic maritime stripes and bondage accents adorned the cuffs of 501® jeans, and exposed selvage run through the side seams of jeans and shorts – in equally pure and uncompromisingly rigid denim. Epitomizing the America Dream since 1973, Levi's itself is an effortlessly cool and edgy brand. Fused with Gaultier's genius sense of innovation, and impeccable couture craftsmanship, the streetwear collection is a refreshing mixture of chic masculinity with utter authenticity and edge.

Sherbet-flavored cardigans, button-ups in gingham and chambray, and Closed’s core speciality, denim, complete the line-up and are all given a breezy, soaked-in-the sea patina.

  • Haoshi X RING

haoshi DESIGN was established in 2009, named by the Chinese pronunciation “Good things.” In our daily life, emotions are often affected by trifles easily, and it is easy to neglect some “good things” around us which can bring us joyfulness and satisfaction. So we add a kind of purity and peace into our design concept. By using concrete exquisite technical art to present the abstract life concept, designers' life philosophy can present completely and perfectly through the visual art.

  • Paolo Pecora Milano – Fall/Winter 2009

Paola Picaro’s FW 09/10 Lookbook brings a little bit of realism back to fashion–the kind that’s been missing, even in “these economic times.” While the clothes speak for themselves with sturdy wools, rich tweeds, and toasty layering, it’s refreshing to see them presented in an everyday setting: the coffee shop. The collection, and the setting, set a mood that isn’t grand or cutting edge, but attainable and on point–giving the overall presentation a dash of Ralph Lauren-esque maturity.

  • Josh Goot Shows Super Sharp Graphics

Australian designer Josh Goot showed a divine, blindingly bright SS2010 collection at London Fashion Week earlier this week, presented in an open air car park - a suitably urban location given the collection's powerfully modern feel.

The collection, made up mostly of elongated t-shirt dresses, mini dresses and tanks, was all about bold graphic prints. The pieces themselves, which also included a handful of pants and jackets, were kind of secondary, acting more like personal, mobile canvases for the beautifully sharp, urban graphic prints that adorned them.

  • Spring 2010 | PETROU\MAN

Styled by Dazed & Confused fashion editor Robbie Spencer, Nicolas Petrou presented his spring 2010 collection during New York Fashion Week. Inspired by an illustration Sirichai completed for Geoffrey Beene during the spring 2001 season, Petrou blended the comfort of sportswear with the attractiveness of modern menswear. The result is a deconstructed mix of patterns, mesh and sequins that look best when presented on Petrou’s reinterpretation of the classic jacket. The beauty of Petrou’s work is his ability to hone in on an abstract style of fashion and still keep it accessible.

  • Jean Paul Gaultier Kids

Jean Paul Gaultier unveiled his debut kids line as part of the a/winter men's show in Paris. The line is produced by the mega- power of Group Zannier, who also produce the licence for Little Marc Jacobs and Kenzo. Mini-me seems to be a popular trend in the world of fashion, with Phillip Lim, Dior and Chloe all replicating miniature looks from the adult lines for which the junior Gaultier line translated well. The collection, for which the models thundered down the catwalk in, appropriated looks from Ray Petri's Buffalo style crossed between the garb of orthodox Jewish men. Novel black suits with deconstructed raincoat details decorated trousers, top hats adorned most looks. Trousers were tight at the bottoms with large pleats and gathering at the waist. The highlight being the only none-black look of the collection, a signature Gaultier raincoat trench, exaggerated flaps and straps looked neat and slightly conceptual. Although not the most wearable collection, this was just a taste of things to come, according to the press team, who promised a larger range of looks to be released later in the season.

  • River Island – Autumn/Winter 2009 Mens Lookbook

River Island seeks to separate itself from the Topman’s and H&M’s of the world with its Autumn / Winter 09 collection and, to a certain extent, it does just that. What works is the play with classic pieces–using nontraditional colors like a yellow cardigan and blue Fair Isle-ish sweater, offering iconic loafers and jeans in modern silhouettes, and well-tailored sport coats and outerwear. On the other hand, the drop-crotch trouser cut, while trendy in some circles, doesn’t seem to fit with the tone of the rest of the collection, as does a wool varsity jacket with a neck just slightly too high in the front. Not a collection to overlook, as it does feature some nice individual items.

The Zot-V comes in deepest Black, three shades to the wind of Silver, or Gold. It tells time in the weirdest way, the coolest way, and it’s got hella functions.

Alarm! Date! Time! and Chronograph! which is such a fancy word for “stopwatch” that my unsophisticated self had to look it up.

The 12 dots represent hours (months in date mode) and the row below counts minutes. Housed in stainless steel with an LCD display, the watch has an EL backlight, leather straps and a stainless steel buckle. It is 35 x 35 x 10mm with 28mm wide band.

  • Angharad McLaren’s woven textiles

Daring bright colors and contemporary designs are the key essentials of Angharad McLaren’s woven textiles.  Inspired by a dynamic mix of human and natural influences McLaren’s latest Shibori Pleat collection is influenced by water sport activities such as sailing and windsurfing.

Her passion for the sea and water-sports visually inspired McLaren to create a collection which features Dobby and Jacquard designs which are ideal for indoor and outdoor applications such as blinds, screens, wall panels, floor mats and furnishings.  Her textiles are created using traditional techniques which are updated using the latest computerized hand-weaving and industrial technology. Materials range from organic natural fibers to neoprene to performance textiles such as recycled ropes which are appropriate for climbing.  While recycling and being super eco-friendly McLaren has an ethical production method of repurposing existing materials into new woven patterns.

  • Jewelry by Kiel Mead

Mead's jewelry stands out in stark contrast to the expected use of precious stones, gems and metals. Where most people see finite use for a common object, Mead sees vast potential. Examples of pendants include a gleaming drill bit, a single matchstick or even a brassy dental retainer, each cast or plated in silver or gold and strung on a fine chain. Mead even used a wad of worn-out bubble gum to model a bright pink gob pendant complete with teeth marks.

  • Vincent Schoepfer – Fall/Winter 2010

With a nod and a wink Paris-based designer Vincent Schoepfer’s Winter 2010 collection arrives as one of the most wearable, and original, of the season. Tailored slim–though not “skinny”–Schoepfer offers new interpretations of classics, with an alternating pattern tuxedo shirt, belting on suit jackets, and a quasi-lapeled leather jacket. But as odd as those may sound, they amazingly work–particularly the leather jacket. But it’s not just humor that makes it such a good collection–the henley, sweatshirt, and navy trouser are all best-in-category, perfect to be basics for years to come.

  • Digital Wardrobe on Microsoft

After years of impulse buying and sale seasons of indiscriminate spending sprees, our wardrobes are now stuffed – largely with things that we no longer even know we own! This calls for intervention, to re-discover these clothes and start getting more mileage out of them. With all of us counting our pennies during the downturn, it becomes even more practical to do this :)

For this purpose, Microsoft invited us to review their latest programs which could help us organize our wardrobes by digitizing them! We spend half our lives on the computer, so the idea of being able to scroll through a library of everything we own is an appealing one.

The most appealing part? How easy it is to get it done! Just 4 simple steps, easily done on a lazy Sunday afternoon:

    1) Spring-clean your wardrobe – toss out what you don’t want to keep anymore.

    2) Take pictures of all the pieces you want to keep.

    3) Upload them to your computer and set up a clothes catalog.

    4) Start using your clothes catalog to create new outfits while sharing them with your friends!

For the creation of this digital walk-in wardrobe, we were introduced to the Windows Live Photo Gallery, photo-editing software which you can currently download for free from the Internet. We were also introduced to Microsoft’s latest OS, Windows 7. We liked it so much, we decided to use it for our demo! (it’s still in test stage but we hear it’s going to be available in October!)

What we found most useful was the portability of the digital wardrobe – it can be accessed online or via our mobile phones while on the go. With Windows Live Photos, we are also able to share our outfits with friends online. This is great for those times when we need to consult our buddies on our outfts (i.e. that very important first date).

And another great plus – we now KNOW what we have in our wardrobes! And how to mix and match them with just a few clicks to come up with a whole new look without breaking the bank.

We’ve created a video especially for you to show you the 4 simple steps to create your own digital wardrobe. We’re starring in it, so check it out!

  • Lego Revival

Iconic retro brands possess strong currency right now. The latest hails not from the annals of fashion or apparel but from the world of toys - we're talking about LEGO, the multi-colored building bricks that we all grew up with. While LEGO is still one of the top children's toy brands, it is spontaneously morphing into a credible street brand, adopted by Gen Y hipsters who still nurture happy memories of playing with the blocks as kids. It's part of a bigger trend, which has seen other iconic mostly 80s brands such as Reebok enjoy unexpected revivals.

LEGO has been appearing in all sorts of unlikely applications from watches to cameras, bags and belts, to usb sticks, mobile phones and even cupcakes. Our favorites include a recent ad for hot fashion house Lanvin, which used color-spray guns made from LEGO in a recent campaign and adorable LEGO fashion show video by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac which cast LEGO figures as fabulous high fashion catwalk models.

Not only is it likely to offer wisdom to your emerging hunter of cool, but it will help you find them in crowds!!

Kidswear has undergone a huge transformation over the last few years, led by a new generation of designers who have applied their creativity to the children's category, usually after having kids themselves. Today kidswear is a carbon copy of adult fashion - incorporating key trends.

  • Feiyue Sneakers

Heritage – it can mean many things, but in the fashion world it’s the buzzword of the moment.

Take a brand that has history and tradition. Inject some freshness and collaborate with a hip artist. Formula – Success. One such example is the re-birth of Feiyue Shoes from Shanghai. Originally created in the 1920s, Feiyue became famous in the 30s for its association with the martial arts. Freiyue symbolizes the dual elevation of both body and mind. Feiyue actually translates to “flying forward”. Fast forward to 2005 and you have Patrice Bastian (a major sneaker freaker) who decided that these shoes could lend themselves to being the new item du jour. They were flexible and light by nature and had a great retro feel. With the services of graphic designer Charles Munka, the new image of Feiyue was created. It has since then gained momentum for being original yet classic and incredibly comfortable. Keeping up with the trends of today, you can choose between fresh, unadorned white, grey marle, artist prints or limited-edition designer styles.
