Some of you may remember the “sneaker class” that was making the rounds in the blog world last year. Sneakerology 101, offered by the Student Collage at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University, is not only the first class of its kind, but a testament to the cultural importance that sneakers have gained. Much of the credit has to go to the classes founders and instructors, Elliot Curtis and Jesse Chorng. Each having their own diverse backgrounds in sneaker culture, the course they proposed was not only eventually offered as a three hour class last year, but received over twice the amount of sign-ups as anticipated.
This spring semester, the class is back, and this time it will be premiering its Reverse Jam collaboration with Reebok at their KICKSBURGH event, to be held April 15th. The shoe’s design cues were carefully tied to the class and the university, resulting in a much more inspired project than your standard collab. The slate colored nubuck, wool tongue, and yellow accents and speckles pay tribute to the blackboard, eraser and chalk found in every classroom. CMU’s school colors are represented on the outsole, and the insole features a plaid in homage to the school’s founder, Andrew Carnegie’s, Scottish heritage. Also found on the insole is a history lesson on the Reverse Jam itself.
The release will be $75 and limited to 101 pairs which will be sold at the KICKSBURGH event. Proceeds will give back to the Pittsburgh community by going to the Hill House Association, a nonprofit organization offering youth-based programs like homework assistance and tutoring as well as continuing education and senior services.
